A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin

Do I even need to introduce you to the world of Westeros? Ignore the series, read them, you'll thank me later.
The Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan

Another high fantasy series of 14 volumes I highly recommend, it was written by the late Robert Jordan, and completed posthumously by his successor, Brandon Sanderson. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is a story that takes place both in our past and our future. In his fantasy world, the Dark One, the embodiment of pure evil, is breaking free from his prison. The overall plot is about a man who learns that he is the reincarnation of the world's messiah and is once again destined to save the world from the Dark One -- but possibly destroy it in the process. This saga is not only his story, but the story of an entire world's struggle to deal with war and change, destruction and hope.
May the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.
The Dresden Files, Jim Butcher

The Dresden Files has become somehow of an obsession for me lately, it is a contemporary urban fantasy series of novels by author Jim Butcher. They are told in first person narrative by the human wizard and private investigator Harry Dresden, who tells of his investigations into supernatural disturbances in modern-day Chicago. So far, the series consists of seventeen novels, along with several novelettes and short stories. Another honorable mention goes to Butcher's other serties: The Codex Alera.
The Sandman Slim Series, Richard Kadrey

Follow the exploits of James Stark, also known as Sandman Slim, amateur magician and supernatural warrior. For those people familiar with The Dresden Files, the series has some surface similarities, but it’s as if someone took Harry Dresden, dipped him in booze and cigarette smoke, dropped him down to Hell, kicked him round the dirt some, then dragged him back up with a bad attitude. Stark is a definite antihero—surly, disrespectful to authority, but loyal to his friends and a defender of the common man.
If you’re looking for a finished urban fantasy book series with a bit of a gritty edge to it and a touch of noir, the Sandman Slim series is for you. 12 books of high octane, page turning action!
